Lesson 02 建築和生活的改變
tea and chat with family and neighbors. During the Japanese colonial era, the Japanese built
many Japanese-style dwellings in Taiwan for residential use. Japanese-style houses were
made of wood. The way in which they were built and the materials used could guard against
dampness and moderate temperature, making those living in them feel very comfortable.
Following urbanization, more and more people moved to the city for work,
thereafter low-rise and high-rise apartment buildings appeared. This kind of housing can
accommodate many people and is usually located near companies, schools, and commercial
areas, with convenient transportation and excellant amenities. However, because there
are many residents in a high-rise apartment building, neighbors may not know each other.
In addition, in order to be suitable for small families or single residents, modern housing
increasingly values functionality and utilization of space. For example, in addition to food
preparation, open kitchens also function as dining rooms and living rooms.
Besides residences, public buildings are also becoming more and more important.
In the past, traditional markets or temple environs were sites where people met, talked, and
established emotional connections. Now, public libraries, gyms, and community centers
have appeared nearby residential areas, allowing people to participate in various activities
and get to know each other.
In recent years, construction techniques have been infused with smart-system and
green-building concepts. Smart-system technology and devices make life more convenient.
For example, mobile phones can adjust lighting and switch electrical appliances on and off.
Green-buildings are equipped with many environmentally friendly devices, which not only
protect the environment, but also conserve electricity and water.
From sanheyuan to high-rise apartment buildings, from traditional markets to
community centers, Taiwan's architecture reflects changes in how people live. In the future,
architecture will continue to develop and bring an even better quality of life.
