Preface

The main purpose of learning a language is to be capable of using it fl uently and naturally
in daily lives. And that purpose corresponds to the needs of young Chinese descent overseas
that want to use Chinese freely and fl exibly. To fulfi ll that purpose and carry out our consistent

policy and concept of serving overseas Chinese, OCAC has published a series of Chinese
teaching materials to meet various needs from different regions. This book, “Speak Mandarin
in One Thousand Words,” meets the taste of mass population, and can be used by different

professions and various ages. Most of this book is written and compiled by Mrs. Ma Chao-hua.
She is a Chinese education professional and holds a position in Mandarin Daily News. Besides,
we also invite Professor Pan Li-chu from the Chinese Department of National Taiwan Normal
University and Professor Fang Li-na from the Graduate Institute of Teaching Chinese as a
Second/Foreign Language of National Kaohsiung Normal University to make this publication

meet the trend of student’s needs. With their years of experience, they have helped amend
and edit this book, and make this book more comprehensive and solid for Chinese students.
OCAC wishes to extend our heartfelt thanks to those professors. As to the English translation,

we would like to give our regards to Professor Wang Yu-fang from the Graduate Institute of
Teaching Chinese as a Second-Foreign Language of National Kaohsiung Normal University to
assist the translation, and make this book more accessible to the needs overseas.

This book is divided into 100 lessons, and every lesson has three units: ”Dialogue”,

“Vocabulary”,and “Grammer and Sentence Patterns”. The content from “Dialogue” is distilled
from daily lives, and is practicability-oriented. The materials range from self-introduction,
communication, travel, and Chinese festivals. Important and frequently used words and phrases

are fully elaborated in “Vocabulary”. Students not only can understand the stroke order of
the listed words, but also the phrases derived from those words. In “Grammer and Sentence
Patterns”, we hope the students can agilely apply the glossary they have learned and use
Chinese fl uently and naturally in daily lives. To maximize the effect of this book, many efforts
have been put into this publication. We hope for teachers choosing this book can arrange

a natural and lively learning environment for the students to learn Chinese in a pleasant
atmosphere. In the end, students can lay solid foundation for Chinese learning in preparation
for further studies of Chinese language. OCAC would also like to take this opportunity to invite

comments and suggestions for this book, and make this book into perfection.
