Indigenous Peoples Festivals
Yami (Tao) - Alibangbang Flying Fish Festival
The Yami Indigenous People are the only indigenous ethnic group in Taiwan outside
of the main island. They live on Lanyu Island east of Taitung and have the distinct character
of a marine culture.
The Yami Alibangbang Flying Fish Festival begins some time between the second
and third month of the lunar calendar every year. Blue-fin flying cod is the main food on
Lanyu Island during this period. The Alibangbang Flying Fish Festival includes three stages.
The Meyvanwa Calling Fish Ritual is to pray for a good harvest. The Mamoka Flying Fish
Storage Ritual is to collect sun-dried blue-fin flying cod. The Manoyotoyon Flying Fish
Cleanup Ritual is held around the Mid-Autumn Festival and is the last time to enjoy blue-fin
flying cod. In addition to continuing the culture of the Yami people, the Alibangbang Flying
Fish Festival also includes respect for the natural environment and the concept of ecological
conservation.
