TCML/CCA Dragon Boat Team Participates in the Asian Festival Dragon Boat Race, Showcasing Teamwork and Cultural Spirit

Ohio — The 2026 Asian Festival Dragon Boat Race took place on May 17 under beautiful sunny skies, attracting 18 teams from across the region. The dragon boat team jointly organized by the Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning (TCML) and the Columbus Chinese Academy (CCA) participated in the event for the second consecutive year. Through their strong performance, the team demonstrated outstanding teamwork while promoting cultural heritage and community engagement.

This year, the TCML/CCA Dragon Boat Team consisted of 21 paddlers, with only six members having participated in last year's race. For most team members, this was their first experience with dragon boat racing. Despite their limited experience, the team worked diligently before the competition, warming up and practicing paddling techniques together to build coordination and prepare for the races.

The competition consisted of three rounds. The TCML/CCA team delivered an impressive performance in the first two rounds, earning first place in both heats and boosting the team's confidence and enthusiasm. During the lunch break, team members enjoyed Taiwanese-style chicken cutlet lunch boxes generously sponsored by the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) and spent time sharing race experiences and strengthening friendships under the team tent.

In the third round, race organizers grouped together teams with similar results from the first two rounds, creating a highly competitive race. The TCML/CCA team gave its best effort and finished second in its final heat. Based on the combined results of all three rounds, the team placed eighth overall among the 18 participating teams, a significant improvement over last year's performance and an encouraging achievement for a largely new team.

The event also highlighted the spirit of mutual support among team members. One TCML student, whose apartment is located near the race venue, generously offered her apartment parking lot for teammates to use, making participation more convenient for everyone. Her thoughtful gesture reflected the strong sense of teamwork, camaraderie, and community spirit within the group.

Team members shared that participating in the dragon boat race not only allowed them to experience the rich traditions of Chinese culture but also strengthened their friendships and teamwork skills. Although this year's competition has concluded successfully, everyone is already looking forward to returning next year to continue promoting dragon boat culture and creating more opportunities for the Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learners to share and celebrate the unique cultural heritage of Taiwan with the local community.
