To the Parents and Teachers

This workbook is designed based on the model of gradually advancing from listening-and-
speaking to listening-and-reading to reading-and-writing. We hope students will start by repeating
words and sentences, and then learn the material so well that in real life they can use its sentence
patterns and vocabulary word. Students will naturally build their Chinese ability step by step and
advance toward the goal of effectively using the language to communicate.

                  ¼ Listening and Speaking:

                  (I) Let’s Read A, B, and D: We would like parents to help their children listen to the audio file,
repeat the new words and sentences, and use the bracketed numbers to answer questions. We hope
students will use the “words→sentences→conversation” order of language, practice repeatedly,
understand the texts, and answer the questions. They should not only get used to the tones of words
and sentences but also practice everything in the content of the textbooks. At the end of the study
session, parents should use questions and answers to test students’ level of understanding of the text
                  and the dialogue.

                  ¼ Listening and Reading:
                  (I) Let’s Read C: We would like parents to help their children listen to the audio file and circle the
sentences they hear. This will improve their ability to recognize characters.
(II) Let’s Read and Comprehend A: We would like parents to help their children understand and
read aloud the dialogues in the text. By repeatedly practicing this segment, they will, step by step,
go from relying on the phonetic symbols (Bopomofo) or Pinyin, to being able to do without audio
support, to being able to independently identify Chinese characters, so they will get used to reading
                  them.
(II) Let’s Read and Comprehend B: Please help the student recognize and read aloud the Chinese
characters in the text. This will strengthen their ability to recognize and read Chinese characters.
(II) Let’s Read and Comprehend C, D, E, and F: Please help the student use the bracketed
numbers to arrange sentences from the text, fill in the blanks, and answer questions. This section is
designed to consolidate students’ understanding of the structure of the Chinese language so they can
                  use it correctly.
(II) Let’s Read and Comprehend F and G: Please help the student read the short essay and use
the bracketed numbers to answer the questions. We hope that reading short essays will cultivate
their ability to read compositions and that answering questions will test students’ grasp and usage
level of sentence patterns and new words, as well as their ability to arrange what they’ve learned.

                  ¼ Reading and Writing:

(III) Phonetic Symbols (Bopomofo) and Pinyin Practice: Please help the student recognize, read,
and write the phonetic symbols (Bopomofo) or Hanyu Pinyin of the Chinese characters in each
lesson. This will improve their ability to read and write Bopomofo or Pinyin.
(IV) Writing: Please help the student use the stroke order from the textbook to write the Chinese
characters given in the book. This will improve their ability to write characters.
