To the Parents and Teachers

The principles of the design of this workbook are based on symbol recognition and linking,
a learning mode that extends from speaking and listening to reading and writing, in the hope that
students will be able to recite the phonetic/Pinyin symbols, identify the phonetic/Pinyin symbols,
then apply the phonetic/Pinyin symbols they have learned in real-life situations. This way, in a
steady, step by step manner, they can cultivate and reinforce their phonetic/Pinyin abilities, enabling
the students to naturally accumulate a solid foundation of language learning.
The phonetic practice offered in this book uses vocabulary words and sentence patterns
from the first three volumes of the textbook series. On one hand, through the symbols used in the
vocabulary words and sentence patterns, it enables children to intentionally acquire the phonetic/
Pinyin alphabet via this communication mode. On the other, it equips the students with preliminary
learning to prepare them for the next step, giving them sufficient familiarity with the content for
when they begin their formal textbook learning of Chinese characters, enabling them to smoothly
            and effectively learn.

            ◆ Speaking and Listening:

Parents should help their children listen to the audio files for parts B, C, and D of every unit and
recite the phonetic/Pinyin and vocabulary words and sentence patterns, and circle the vocabulary
words and sentence patterns they hear. The major goal of practicing these sections is to enable the
student to gradually learn to use the phonetics from the vocabulary word through building listening
and speaking abilities for the different symbols. Further, repeated practice will enable the students to
become familiar with the sounds of the phonetics/Pinyin symbols, and through circling vocabulary
words and sentence patterns, student learning will be checked.

            ◆ Reading and Writing:

            I. Coloring: Parents should help their children identify phonetic/Pinyin symbols, and then help
them color in the correct symbol. We hope that coloring of the specified symbol will strengthen
their ability to identify the different symbols.

II. Matching: Please help your children match the picture to the related phonetic/Pinyin. The
practice for this section is designed in the hope that through matching the picture and its
related phonetic/Pinyin will increase student ability to identify the symbols, and at the same
time strengthen student understanding of the use of the symbols in the vocabulary words and
                sentence patterns.
III. Writing: Please help your child fill in the phonetic/Pinyin for the missing vocabulary words and
sentence patterns. The practice in this section “intentionally” builds the child’s phonetic/Pinyin
writing ability through filling in the phonetic/Pinyin for the missing vocabulary words and
                sentence patterns.
