In 1994, Tzu Chi established its first humanities school in Los Angeles, California, USA. It has been 29 years since its establishment. There are twenty-five schools across the United States. The center passed the review of the ROC Overseas Chinese Affairs Committee of the in 2022, and officially opened adult classes on January 15, 2023. There were only two 4-week Pinyin courses for adults previously. Courses were set to satisfy the needs of parents of students who did not understand Mandarin. Adhering to the philosophy and quality of Tzu Chi’s operation principles, the TCML teaches " Mandarin listening, speaking, reading, writing and typing skills" and "Jing Si Aphorisms", as well as "Madarin" and "Humanistic". TCML courses are designed for adult students aged 18 and above. It is run by mainstream people and tailor-made courses are offered according to the actual needs of students. Courses are designed to raise interest in learning Mandarin and enhance understanding of the Taiwanese culture and multiculturalism, with the hope that students may put what they’ve acquired to practical daily use.
The biggest feature will not only be "language class", but also "humanities & culture class" with Tzu Chi's humanistic spirit, including fundraising for the Turkish earthquake in February. The class will also explain concepts of environmental protection and loving the earth. It will also teach flower arrangement, tea ceremony and calligraphy, traditional painting appreciation, and introduce traditional folk customs of Taiwanese festivals, such as Hakka culture Leicha, and making rice dumplings and popiah/Taiwanese spring roll. The courses will use the Taiwanese food culture to deepen American students' understanding of Taiwanese culture and attract students to class. Students will participate in the Traditional Character Cultural Festival, watch Taiwanese performances, and experience Taiwanese culture. Multiple customized learning content will be provided.
There are currently two beginner classes. In September, one intermediate class and one beginner class will be launched. The teaching will focus on listening and speaking skills, supplemented by reading, writing and typing skills. Moreover, students will learn about Taiwanese traditional culture and folk festivals. For example: Lunar New Year, Lantern Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, with food and life etiquette, flower arrangement and tea ceremony. The key point is to promote Taiwanese folk culture and tourism, traditional culture and the humanistic spirit of respecting etiquette, respecting filial piety, and respecting teachers and elders.
