Courses
Our school is located in Raritan Valley Community College, Somerset County, New Jersey. Classes are set to be held on Sundays from 11:30AM to 12:30PM and will mainly be taught in traditional Mandarin characters and Hanyu Pinyin. Course contents include language, culture and adult activities.
TCML-NJRVCS mainly uses Let’s Learn Mandarin textbooks subsidized by the OCAC as its basic teaching material. Other supplementary teaching materials include My Mini Radical Dictionary, Speak Mandarin in One Thousand Words, Common Chinese Sentence Patterns, Situated-based Business Chinese, Advanced Business Chinese, and Global Business Chinese.
We hold cultural events on a monthly basis, mainly focusing on the introduction of traditional festivals such as the Lunar New Year, Lantern Festival, Tomb-Sweeping Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Double Ninth Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and Winter Solstice, etc.
The Chinese people have always placed great priority on food, over all else, thus celebrations are always tied to all kinds of gourmet and delicacies. Therefore, our basic concept in culture teaching is "learning Mandarin through eating, drinking and having fun".
Cultural activities include making (eating) rice cakes for Lunar New Year, paper-cutting, paper origami tops, making (eating) rice balls for Lantern Festivals, making lanterns, making (eating) Spring rolls, making (eating) rice dumplings for Dragon Boat Festival, making (rowing) dragon boats, making rice cakes for Double Ninth Festival, making kites, making birthday noodles, making moon cakes, making glutinous rice balls, making red bean cakes and other fun and delicious courses.
The cultural activities are aimed to reinforce the use of Mandarin language and to enhance the understanding of its history and culture, and are determined every academic year according to students’ needs. At present, the Center’s adult courses are mainly held online during weekdays, and further supplemented by in-person courses on weekends and special gatherings.
